This hypersonic jet can take travelers from New York City to London in less than an hour.
Venus Aerospace, a Texan aerospace company, is working on building a hypersonic aircraft, called the Stargazer, that would travel about six times the speed of sound and reach much higher altitudes.
The nearly 3,500-mile trip from New York to London typically takes about seven hours.
Other high-speed jets have shortened the journey, but never by this much.
Stargazer would be about three times faster than Concorde and five times faster than NASA’s next plane nicknamed “Son of Concorde.”
There are about 21 direct flights from New York City to London each day, according to Flights From.
The new $33 million plane would drastically improve travel for those who want to cross the pond.
Venus Aerospace debuted the engine — the Venus Detonation Ramjet 2,000-pound Thrust Engine (VDR2), which would power the plane — at the Up.Summit innovation event in Bentonville, Arkansas, last week.
Stargazer would take off using traditional jet engines and then switch to VDR2 once it reached a suitable altitude.
The VDR2, which uses rockets and a ramjet, is expected to reach 4,600 miles per hour, about six times the speed of sound (Mach 6).
Along with the Stargazer, the engine will also be used to power high-speed drones and was successfully tested on a small drone earlier this year.
The company is expected to complete a second drone test in 2025.
Passengers traveling in the hypersonic jet will not only fly faster – they will also go higher, reaching up to 110,000 feet, which will allow them to see the curvature of the Earth.
Concorde reached about 60,000 feet, and the regular altitude of a passenger jet is about 35,000 feet.
“This engine makes hypersonic economy a reality,” said Dr. Andrew Duggleby, co-founder of Venus Aerospace, said during the unveiling at the Up.Summit innovation gathering.
“We are excited to partner with Velontra to achieve this revolution in high-speed flight, given their expertise in high-speed air combustion.”
